"Local MP Sarah Teather meets Ealing planners over proposed Harlesden incinerator"

"Local Liberal Democrat MP Sarah Teather has met with officials from Ealing Council to raise her and her constituents' objections to the proposal to build a giant waste plant and incinerator at Willesden Junction, on the border with Harlesden.

"Ms Teather has strongly opposed the construction of the incinerator, stating that the incinerator could be damaging for the local area and the environment.

"During the meeting, Ms Teather was alarmed to learn that an air impact assessment carried out found that the proposals would lead to an unacceptable increases in benzene, carbon monoxide and sulphur dioxide. All three of these pollutants can have negative public health impacts.

"In addition, the facility would be open between 6am and 11pm on weekdays, and 6am and 3pm on Saturdays, leading to concerns that local residents will have their mornings and evenings disturbed by HGVs accessing the site.

"The officials from Ealing Council also updated Sarah Teather on the negotiations between the developers who want to build the waste plant and High Speed 2 (HS2). Shortly before Christmas, it was revealed that that the Willesden Junction site had been requested for use by contractors working on HS2, leading to the delay of the incinerator application, and discussions are ongoing.

"Commenting, local Lib Dem MP Teather said:
"The more I hear about this proposed waste plant, the more concerns I have. To have HGVs accessing the site from as early as 6am is completely unacceptable, especially as those that turn up early will be idling on the nearby access roads. What's more, the air impact assessment shows that the plans would have serious implications for the health of my constituents living near to the site.

Despite the uncertainty regarding the application due to the ongoing discussions with HS2, concerned local residents must remain vigilant. I urge those people who haven't made their views known to Ealing planners to do so as soon as possible."

  1. She seems happy with the waste lorries concentrating on Harlesden roads, as long as it is not in the early morning and late evening!

Any site like this should be linked directly to the primary road network - the A40, NCR, and so on, and not residential streets.
