"National Grid is building 33km of tunnels under the capital; between Hackney and Willesden and from Kensal Green to Wimbledon. These tunnels will carry 400kV energy cables of the future up to 60m under the capital, avoiding the necessity to dig current ones up within our roads.
"There are a dozen shaft sites between Hackney and Willesden, also Wimbledon and Kensal Green. These will allow access to the tunnels which will run up to 60 m deep. The are two Tunnel Boring machines already working under the capital's streets: Evelyn and Cleopatra.
"At Channel Gate Road in Willesden there is an Energy Education Centre (EEC) designed to challenge schoolchildren and adults alike in their perceptions of energy provision. This leads through a short section of tunnel onto the site and a short walk to an enclosed viewing platform overlooking the shaft itself.
