"THE 'West Coast Main Line study' ... will not recommend any enhancements to Watford DC services. While services are crowded, this is only for short sections on the approaches to Harrow & Wealdstone, Willesden Junction and Queens Park.
"The second generation 'London & South East study' is also nearing the drafting stage. London Rail is working very closely with Network Rail to ensure ... that the study reflects TfL’s priorities for both passenger services and freight in the capital.
"A 'HS2 workstream' involves options for connecting the proposed interchange station at Old Oak Common into the wider rail network, to improve access to HS2. This could involve new platforms on both the North and West London Lines, and potentially new London Overground services to other destinations. Public consultation on HS2’s proposals is expected in early 2011."
Earlier comments:
ON 4 October 2010, Secretary of State for Transport Philip Hammond announced approval of the 'High Speed Two' rail line, with a public inquiry next year. This is believed to include a joint 'High Speed Two' and 'Great Western Main Line / Crossrail' station in west London, at Old Oak Common, just south of Harlesden.
(Theresa Villiers, Minister of State for Transport, calls this station 'Wormwood Scrubs International'.)

This initiative could have a huge long-term impact on the future of Harlesden if it goes ahead.
ReplyDeleteDoes anybody know if the proposal includes a strong connection to Willesden Junction and whether Old Oak common would be built at the same time as Crossrail or later?
Thanks
The government will issue a report on whether Old Oak Common is favoured by the end of the year. There would be public consulation in 2011.
ReplyDeleteI hope the public consultation gives us a chance to support the building of the Old Oak Common station and links to Willesden Junction at the same time as Crossrail is built.
ReplyDeleteAn early positive decision would have a huge impact on Harlesden's future.
Re Old Oak Common/Wormwood Scrubs, surely Park Royal International is a more attractive name? - and it translates neatly into European langauges, which the others don't.
ReplyDeleteMore seriously, I sense that TfL's thinking on connecting the proposed interchange with WLL/NLL does not align at present with HS2 Ltd, who are proposing a spur from the West London line into a bay platform at the interchange station.
This would not connect with Willesden Junction, but is considerably cheaper than diverting WLL/NLL to give connecting platforms with HS2/Crossrail and GW Main Line.
I think that TfL are trying to persuade them to change their minds. It would be a pity if the orbital connections were restricted.
'Park Royal International' sounds less fanciful than you suggest.
ReplyDeleteI would support 'Park Royal International'. It would focus on the commercial links with the area. But its important that the station is accessible from Harlesden (and Stonebridge) - that is why what happens to the connectivity with Willesden Junction is important.
ReplyDeleteThe Mayor of London was asked about it recently.
